Juniors Section

Welcome from John Walsh, Junior Chairman and Joe Bellamy, 2017 Junior Captain.

Droitwich Golf Club has 40 junior members aged between 5 and 18 with handicaps ranging from low single figures up to 54.

We are proud to have been awarded England Golf’s “GolfMark” accreditation in 2007 which was recently upgraded in 2016. GolfMark provides the basic foundation to the commitment we have in maintaining and improving junior golf in a safe environment at the golf club.

Since January 2015 the golf club has offered free membership to juniors up to the age of 15 who currently have a full or five day parent or grandparent members of the club. From January 2016 this free membership was extended to juniors up to the age of 16.

From 1st April 2017 the Junior Captain is Joe Bellamy and the Junior Vice Captain is Luke Rolinson.

The junior section holds a series of competitions and events throughout the season including monthly Medals and Stablefords (both 18 & 9 hole), Texas Scrambles, Girl’s Events, Skill Challenges and a JUNIOR DAY in August.
There are also two major prestigious open competitions, the GIRLS OPEN held on Thursday 16th April and the BOYS OPEN on Thursday 27th July. These events are extremely popular and attract a large number of junior golfers from golf clubs within Worcestershire and other Counties.

We also have a Junior Team that competes both home and away in the West Midlands Junior Golf League and in the Royal British Legion Junior Golf Championship.

The Junior Section provides regular group coaching with our PGA Professional Staff at discounted rates for junior members and those juniors wishing to take up the game. Droitwich Golf Club is an official HSBC Golf Foundation “Golf Roots Centre” and uses the junior Golf Passport in its junior coaching programme.

We welcome new junior members and those juniors who wish to attend coaching sessions. JUNIOR SECTION NEWS

January 2017

John Walsh, Junior Section Chairman writes:

Group coaching resumed on Saturday 7th January at Copcut Driving Range. Attendance has been absolutely brilliant in spite of the cold weather. In the first three (3) Saturday’s of the month numbers attending are up 300% compared to the same period of 2016. There has been an average of nearly 13 juniors per week so far this year completely surpassing an average of 4 in 2016.

Clearly the decision to have winter group coaching at Copcut has been an unqualified success. What is particularly striking are the numbers at the afternoon session which is for juniors aged 6 to 12. This is the age group that the Golf Club really needs to expand and retain.

Phil says “In 30 years of teaching juniors I have never seen so much enthusiasm from junior boys/girls and parents/grandparents. The juniors are deriving immense enjoyment from the coaching which also involves team games and fun activities.

The growing numbers may mean splitting the group further in the near future.

It is very good that parents and grandparents are staying to see what is being taught and actually becoming involved. It is great to see the juniors obtaining so much enjoyment and asking whether they can come the following Saturday.”

Some of the juniors who are attending group sessions now intend to have individual lessons.

Three Texas Scrambles and Girls Events have been added to the 2017 Junior Fixture List specifically intended for this age group (6 to 12).

Considerable publicity is being given to the DROITWICH GIRLS OPEN being held on Thursday 16th April. It is being advertised by a national golf magazine “Women in Golf.” The aim is to attract up to 60 girls for the event.
For more information about Junior Golf Membership and Coaching at Droitwich GC, contact Phil or Phoebe in the Pro Shop.

JUNIOR SECTION End of year review – 2016

We have had a great year.....

We were able to enter our own team in the West Midlands Junior Golf League – first time since 2012.

In all, 15 juniors played for the junior team in 13 matches, having handicaps from 6 to 54 and ages 9 to 18.

The junior team (of four players) reached the last 32 of the Royal British Legion Junior Challenge (National Match Play Tournament).
We entered teams (3 players in the team) in the WORCESTERSHIRE BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP (held at Droitwich) and the BOB OSBORN TROPHY (West Midlands Junior Golf League end of season team trophy) where the Droitwich team of Luke Rolinson, Oliver Dix and Ryan Waterhouse finished a very creditable 3rd beating clubs such as Gaudet Luce, Kings Norton, Enville, Bewdley Pines and South Staffordshire.
Twelve (12) juniors have reduced their handicaps during the season, some by quite large margins.

Five (5) juniors played in men’s and ladies club competitions.

We held two (2) GIRLS EVENTS in July and September and now have a total of nine (9) girl junior members.

Coaching on Saturdays (two sessions) have been held throughout the season (Copcut in the winter) with an average attendance of between 7 to 8 juniors.

We have gained eleven (11) new junior members this year.
Phoebe Stanley (aged 18, handicap 7.8) has been a brilliant Junior Captain, leading from the front and ensuring that all the juniors have bonded together. Phoebe had the best gross score overall in the Junior Championship. Phoebe also reached the final of the Ladies Championship but unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury.

Brandon Sarfo (aged 14) has been selected for the England Regional (Midlands) Squad.

Luke Rolinson (aged 15, handicap 5.5) has played for the Worcestershire County U16’s team throughout 2016. Apart from winning the Boys Junior Championship, he scored Gross 66 in a non-qualifying competition at Bromsgrove G.C which equalled the course record. Luke has been asked to play for the Droitwich A Shield team.

And finally Oliver Dix has played for the men’s Droitwich A Team in the Worcestershire League and Droitwich Shield and reduced his handicap from 11 to 8.

WEST MIDLANDS JUNIOR GOLF LEAGUE

Match 8 – Bromsgrove vs Droitwich
Sunday 21st August 2016

The Junior Team’s last league match was away at Bromsgrove G.C. The day was cloudy with some wind but mainly dry conditions.

This was the youngest Droitwich team all season with an average age of 13 ½ comprising two 10, 12 & 13 year olds. Five members of the team with handicaps ranging from 45 to 54 had to play off the maximum league handicap of 36. They were ably supported by the more experienced players – Phoebe, Joe & Ryan.

Three of the four matches were extremely close games and the results were only decided on the final hole.

This was an extremely fine team effort away from home and the final result was a drawn match (2 – 2). With such a young team doing so well this bodes well for the future.

The hospitality at Bromsgrove Golf Club was very good and all the players had a meal after the game with the traditional speeches by both Junior Captain’s.

MATCH RESULTS

Andrew Hind (14) & Sophie Hind (26) lost 1 down vs Phoebe Stanley (8) & Tobey Jones (36)

Royal British Legion Junior Championship 2nd Round

Finham Park, Coventry vs Droitwich – Saturday 2nd July 2016

Finham Park was in very good condition for this match. The course measures 6,600 yards and is a par 73 from the white tees. It has been used for OPEN regional qualifiers. The weather was much improved with sunny and windy conditions. However the course played its full length due to recent rain and very soft conditions.
Droitwich led early in the game and managed to maintain a small overall lead into the back nine holes. Oliver and Ryan then proceeded to pull away from the opposition with some steady play. Despite a fight back from Finham, Phoebe and young Oliver Stanford held onto their narrow lead to the 18th.
This was a very commendable victory by 6 holes for Droitwich versus a team who have twice before reached the Quarter Finals. Also it must be said that away victories are very hard to come by in any match play tournament.
Droitwich have now reached the final 32 (3rd Round) of the tournament and have been drawn at home versus Kington G.C, Herefordshire. The match has to be played by Sunday 31st July.
RESULTS
Phoebe Stanley (8) & Oliver Stanford (17) won by 1 hole vs Rocca Luca (6) & Sam Miles (21)
Oliver Dix (10) & Ryan Waterhouse (26) won by 5 holes vs Amrit Hayer (5) & Matthew Pandya (12)

The match versus a combined Kidderminster and Churchill & Blakedown (C & B) team was the second of the league season. It was a mainly dry and sunny day and the course was in good condition. Kidderminster measures over 6,400 yards off the white medal tees and was a good test for our young junior team most of whom had not played the course before. The format is Four Ball Better Ball and 4 games were played. The results were as follows.
Oliver Dix (11) & Ryan Waterhouse (26) Lost 3 & 2 to Ethan Davies (6) & Olivia Williams (36)

Oliver Stanford (17) 5 Up Euan Cadle (18)
Josh Young (14)

2 Oliver Dix (11)
Ryan Waterhouse (26) 5 up Harry Schlitz (18)

Result All Square

The match was played at Droitwich in very difficult conditions of cold, intermittent heavy rain, hailstones and a strong breeze. After 18 holes the result was all square and the two lowest handicap players on each side played sudden death to decide the winner.

The 1st extra hole (1st) was halved in pars and eventually Droitwich won the match with a par by Luke Rolinson at the 2nd extra hole (9th).

This was an extremely exciting match and all the boys deserve credit for playing so well in such awful conditions. The Droitwich boys recovered from a 9 hole deficit of 3 holes to pull off an excellent victory against Staverton Park who have been quarter finalists in this Championship. We now await our opponents in the 2nd Round which is due to be played in June.

Sam Dixon (10)

4 Oliver Stanford (17)
Ryan Waterhouse (26) Halved Halved Matt Jones (11)
Lewis Grinham (19)
Result 1/2 3 1/2

The home match versus Halesowen was our opening match in the League campaign.
It was played on a cold and wet afternoon with drizzly rain and a moderate breeze.

Our very young team (average age 13.5) came up against an older and more experienced Halesowen team (average age nearly 17). Halesowen won the League 2 years ago with much the same team. After 9 holes the result was very close with Droitwich up in one game down in one and level in two. However Halesowen pulled away on the back nine to win by 3 – 0 with the last match being halved.

Special mention to Oliver and Ryan were led for most of their game and eventually managed a very creditable halved match versus strong opponents. Also many thanks to Josh Meynell (aged 9) who played as a late replacement for Phoebe and will have gained invaluable experience from his first match for Droitwich.

The following day (Sunday 1st May) The Junior Team met Halesowen in their first West Midlands League match and lost by 3 ½ - ½ .
