Welcome from John Walsh, Junior Chairman and Joe Bellamy, 2017 Junior Captain (April 17 to Mar 18).

Droitwich Golf Club has 40 junior members aged between 5 and 18 with handicaps ranging from low single figures up to 54.

We are proud to have been awarded England Golf’s “GolfMark” accreditation in 2007 which was recently upgraded in 2016. GolfMark provides the basic foundation to the commitment we have in maintaining and improving junior golf in a safe environment at the golf club.

Since January 2015 the golf club has offered free membership to juniors up to the age of 15 who currently have a full or five day parent or grandparent members of the club. From January 2016 this free membership was extended to juniors up to the age of 16.

From 1st April 2017 the Junior Captain is Joe Bellamy and the Junior Vice Captain is Luke Rolinson.

The junior section holds a series of competitions and events throughout the season including monthly Medals and Stablefords (both 18 & 9 hole), Texas Scrambles, Girl’s Events, Skill Challenges and a JUNIOR DAY in August.
There are also two major prestigious open competitions, the GIRLS OPEN held on Thursday 16th April and the BOYS OPEN on Thursday 27th July. These events are extremely popular and attract a large number of junior golfers from golf clubs within Worcestershire and other Counties.

We also have a Junior Team that competes both home and away in the West Midlands Junior Golf League and in the Royal British Legion Junior Golf Championship.

The Junior Section provides regular group coaching with our PGA Professional Staff at discounted rates for junior members and those juniors wishing to take up the game. Droitwich Golf Club is an official HSBC Golf Foundation “Golf Roots Centre” and uses the junior Golf Passport in its junior coaching programme.

August 2017

2017 has been another good year to be a Junior at Droitwich Golf Club.

During this year twelve (12) new junior members have been recruited. We now have a total junior membership of forty-five (45).

Thirteen (13) junior members have reduced their handicaps during the season, some by quite large margins.

Three boys and four girls have played for the county team.

Coaching on Saturdays (two sessions) have been held throughout the season (At Copcut Driving Range in the winter) with an average Saturday attendance of between 8 to 9 juniors. In total 30 junior members and some non-members have attended more than once during the year.

The junior team was unbeaten at home in the West Midlands Junior Golf League.

In all, 14 juniors played for the junior team in 10 matches, having handicaps ranging from 5 to 46 and ages 10 to 18. The average age of the current junior team is thirteen (13) which bodes well for the future.

There were some fine individual achievements during the season of which only a few can be mentioned:
Joe Bellamy (aged 18) ended six (6) years as a junior member in the role of junior captain. He won the Junior Championship (nett) and led the junior team throughout the season winning the majority of his matches.
Luke Rolinson (aged 16, handicap 5) recovered from a broken wrist and played for the Worcestershire County U16’s team and was their most successful player. Luke also won the Bromsgrove Junior Championship. He will become junior captain from 1st April 2018.
Ryan Waterhouse (aged 17) who has probably been the most consistent junior over the last 2 years won the Droitwich Spa Salver (Droitwich Boys Open) and the 18 Hole Order of Merit Trophy.
Lili-Rose Hunt (aged 12) who only joined us in early 2017 enjoyed a truly wonderful season and had a very long list of 1st & 2nd places to her name including England Golf’s Abraham Trophy, County Girls Championship, Peter Skidmore (Bob Osborn) Trophy and The Kids Open UK Final Golf Championship. In this latter tournament she has qualified for the 2018 World Final to be played at Pinehurst, North Carolina, USA. During the season she has reduced her handicap from 19 to 12.
Grace Bowen (aged 12) another fairly new member won the Girls Junior Championship (Gross) and the Match Play Singles Championship. This is the first time that a girl has won this trophy in the history of the event. She also had the best individual playing record for the junior team.
Elliot Jones (aged 11) another new member this year won the Boys Junior Championship (Gross) and a Junior Monthly Medal. He supported and played in most of the junior competitions during the season.
Finally, some really good news that should bring benefits to the junior section and the golf club as a whole.

Next season there will be a new practice ground short hole and a new short blue course of about 3,400 yards specifically designed for relatively new juniors and new starters to the game. This course has now been measured and should be ready for play and competitions by April 2018.

In the first three (3) Saturday’s of the month numbers attending are up 300% compared to the same period of 2016. There has been an average of nearly 13 juniors per week so far this year completely surpassing an average of 4 in 2016.

Clearly the decision to have winter group coaching at Copcut has been an unqualified success. What is particularly striking are the numbers at the afternoon session which is for juniors aged 6 to 12. This is the age group that the Golf Club really needs to expand and retain.

Phil says “In 30 years of teaching juniors I have never seen so much enthusiasm from junior boys/girls and parents/grandparents. The juniors are deriving immense enjoyment from the coaching which also involves team games and fun activities.

The growing numbers may mean splitting the group further in the near future.

It is very good that parents and grandparents are staying to see what is being taught and actually becoming involved. It is great to see the juniors obtaining so much enjoyment and asking whether they can come the following Saturday.”

Some of the juniors who are attending group sessions now intend to have individual lessons.

Three Texas Scrambles and Girls Events have been added to the 2017 Junior Fixture List specifically intended for this age group (6 to 12).

Considerable publicity is being given to the DROITWICH GIRLS OPEN being held on Thursday 16th April. It is being advertised by a national golf magazine “Women in Golf.” The aim is to attract up to 60 girls for the event.

JUNIOR SECTION End of year review – 2016

We have had a great year.....

We were able to enter our own team in the West Midlands Junior Golf League – first time since 2012.

In all, 15 juniors played for the junior team in 13 matches, having handicaps from 6 to 54 and ages 9 to 18.

The junior team (of four players) reached the last 32 of the Royal British Legion Junior Challenge (National Match Play Tournament).
We entered teams (3 players in the team) in the WORCESTERSHIRE BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP (held at Droitwich) and the BOB OSBORN TROPHY (West Midlands Junior Golf League end of season team trophy) where the Droitwich team of Luke Rolinson, Oliver Dix and Ryan Waterhouse finished a very creditable 3rd beating clubs such as Gaudet Luce, Kings Norton, Enville, Bewdley Pines and South Staffordshire.
Twelve (12) juniors have reduced their handicaps during the season, some by quite large margins.

Five (5) juniors played in men’s and ladies club competitions.

We held two (2) GIRLS EVENTS in July and September and now have a total of nine (9) girl junior members.

Coaching on Saturdays (two sessions) have been held throughout the season (Copcut in the winter) with an average attendance of between 7 to 8 juniors.

We have gained eleven (11) new junior members this year.
Phoebe Stanley (aged 18, handicap 7.8) has been a brilliant Junior Captain, leading from the front and ensuring that all the juniors have bonded together. Phoebe had the best gross score overall in the Junior Championship. Phoebe also reached the final of the Ladies Championship but unfortunately had to withdraw due to injury.

Brandon Sarfo (aged 14) has been selected for the England Regional (Midlands) Squad.

Luke Rolinson (aged 15, handicap 5.5) has played for the Worcestershire County U16’s team throughout 2016. Apart from winning the Boys Junior Championship, he scored Gross 66 in a non-qualifying competition at Bromsgrove G.C which equalled the course record. Luke has been asked to play for the Droitwich A Shield team.

And finally Oliver Dix has played for the men’s Droitwich A Team in the Worcestershire League and Droitwich Shield and reduced his handicap from 11 to 8.
